Beating the Odds wins UN media award

The ABC News Online Investigations team has been awarded the prestigious UN Media Peace Prize in Melbourne for Best Online report.

Woohoo! I did the social media strategy for this project. We had some fantastic input from readers - you can read them at the bottom of the page.

But obviously, the bulk of the credit goes to reporter Eleanor Bell and photographer Ed Giles, who uncovered some fantastic stories in Mt Druitt.

Storify: your thoughts on Afghanistan

At my day job - social media guy with the ABC - we've been experimenting with using Storify to collate viewer responses. Today, I've pulled together some content on the Afghanistan debate. Some great responses, and photos from isafmedia.

I was hoping the embed would work, but it doesn't. You can check it out here: http://storify.com/abcnews/should-australia-stay-in-afghanistan

Far from Freedom

This is Far from Freedom, the project I've been working on.

It's a special investigation into the plight of Iraqi refugees in Jordan, by Ed Giles and a bunch of talented people at the ABC.

I've been working on the social media side of it.

First video on The Soapbox

The Soapbox - video comments - was one of the recommendations we implemented after the social media working group earlier this year.

Think you can do better? We'd love to hear from you: http://www.abc.net.au/news/opinion/soapbox/

Now live: The Soapbox

When I'm not writing, I'm working at ABC News Online, which is based in Brisbane.

At the moment, I'm heading our push to ramp up our social media, user-generated content and online communities effort.

The latest thing we've done -- just launched today -- is The Soapbox, which offers ABC readers/viewers the opportunity to contribute video comments.

Please take a look, and pass this info on to all the opinionated extroverts you know!
